As I mentioned in my previous post, the cutover date will be Wednesday, February 23rd.  That's the day that the .org site AND its related email list will go away.

OK, gang

I posted the following email message today to the MOT email list:

OK, guys and gals.  The day of reckoning has arrived.

I sent all of you the results of your voting almost a month ago.  Your overwhelming opinion at that time was to go with the "New" forum-based website.  I told you then that the change would not take place overnight -- it would take a little bit of time to work out all of the bugs.  Now, I think that all of those bugs are worked out to the point that we can legitimately make the switch.  So, ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23RD, Steve will pull the plug on the "Old" .org website -- the admins will remove the re-direct from the homepage of the "New" .com website -- and THIS EMAIL LIST WILL CEASE TO EXIST!

Initially, the new website will only be forum-based.  There may be a way, somewhere down the road, that I can add email to the new site.  And, believe me, I'm working on it!  I could do it right now, but I'm looking for a way to link email to the forum and vice versa.  I don't want to do anything that will further splinter our little band of Mini/MINI-acs.  I want all of us to be able to communicate with each other on the same page on a day-to-day basis.  If some of you are on the forum and others are on a disconnected email list, there's no way that we're going to get that kind of continuity.

If you haven't already done so, please go to the new website:  http://www.miniownersoftexas.com  and register for the forum.  This is an approval-based process.  You can't just automatically sign up.  Your request must first be approved by one of our admins.  If we can't, automatically, identify who you are from your email address and the information you provide, we may send you a follow-up message asking for more information before approving your request.  Please be honest with us.  This is not done to harass you -- it's done to cut down on the number of spammers who are trying to infiltrate our group.

Once you've been approved, you can can go to your "preferences" and select whether you want to be notified by email any time there's any activity on a particular topic.  Ideally, if you do that, you will never have to go specifically to the forum to learn of activity unless a new topic is posted.  You'll be notified by email.  If you go to the forum, in response to an email notification -- and find a new topic -- you can opt to get email messages when that topic is discussed, too.

I know that this sounds complicated, but it's really not.  It just takes a few minutes on your part to go through the initial setup process.  From there on, it should be automatic.  And the new website is NOT Wiki-based, which seemed to be one of the major complaints about the old website!

Please remember that you can always contact any one of the admins if you should have a problem with -- or question about -- the new website.

Thanks a bunch

Happy Mini/MINI-ing

JL

I just wanted to keep all of you "in the loop" about the changes that are about to take place.  Hopefully, we can get this merry little band of Mini/MINI-acs back on the same page and headed down the road to a coherent organization again

I just posted the following message to the MOT email list:

Well -- I know you're all waiting with bated (fishy?) breath to learn the outcome of the website voting.  It officially ended at midnight last (Saturday) night and, as promised, I'm releasing the results today.

Before I do, however, I want to take just a minute to thank all of you who actually took the time to vote.  At one time, our list numbered well over 100 people.  However, on this important issue, only 29 people took the time to vote.  And that's really sad.  So, to those 29, I say, "Thank you very much!"  I asked for your direction and you gave it.

Now, on to the results.  Of the 29 people who voted, 21 said they preferred the new experimental website.  However, three of those did qualify their votes by saying that they would also like to have email on the new site.  (That IS a possibility)  Three of those who voted were in favor of keeping the existing website.  The remaining five said they were good with either one.

So, what happens now?

Initially, nothing!  This is going to be a slow and deliberate process to make sure that nobody gets left out.  I'll be working with Steve and the Administrators of the new experimental website to affect an orderly transition.  All of you will be kept "in the loop" as things move along.

Please remember, though -- voting for a change in websites will not, automatically, change the direction of our group.  And, I'm sad to say, that direction has been steadily going downhill.  It's going to take events and activities to keep the group together and the enthusiasm up.  That's where each and every one of you come into the equation.  "Behold, the turtle!  He makes no progress until he sticks his head out."  So stick your head out and make things happen -- even if it's nothing more than just getting a few nearby Mini/MINI-acs together for a couple of cool brews and some fish and chips at your neighborhood pub on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.  The "spirit" is what got this group started and the "spirit" is what's going to see it continue to grow and prosper.

Again, my thanks to those who took time to vote.  Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any thoughts or ideas or, for that matter, any complaints.  This is YOUR club and we need YOUR input to make things happen.

Happy Mini/MINI-ing!!!

OK, gang

I just posted the following message to the MOT email list:

OK, guys and gals.

The official voting period ended 12/31/10.  To date, I have received 22 votes.  However, it has been pointed out to me that the voting period was open over the Christmas and New Years holidays and many of you have not had a chance to vote since you were either out of town or out of touch with the web world.  SO... I've decided to keep the voting and the open registration on the experimental site open for one more week.  The absolute drop-dead deadline for voting is now 01/08/11 (that's next Saturday)

If you haven't been there yet, please go to the experimental website:  http:\\www.miniownersoftexas.com and register.  Then check out the experimental website.  After you've done so, please vote on whether you prefer the experimental website or what we've already got.  If you don't like either, please let me know what you would like to see.

This is YOUR club and I'm not going to make any changes to it unless or until I hear from you.  So please take a few minutes to check out the experimental website -- compare it to our existing website -- and then let me know your preferences.

You can reply to the whole list or you can email me directly at jlieberman37 - at - comcast - dot - net

If you're reading this on the experimental website, just reply to the topic.

Thanks a bunch and happy Mini/MINI-ing

JL

If you haven't already done so, please take a couple of minutes to vote

Hey, everybody

I just sent this reminder to the MOT email list:

Hey, gang!

Time is running out for you to vote on whether you prefer the old email-based website or the new experimental forum-based website.  Voting is open through the end of the year.  I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to vote already.  If you have not voted yet, please take a moment to do so.  You can vote by responding to this email or you can email me directly at jlieberman37-at-comcast-dot-net.  If you haven't been to the experimental site yet, please take a few minutes to go there and browse around.  Better yet -- once you're there, get registered.  Then go to the forum and send a message introducing yourself -- even if we already know you.

Happy Mini/MINI-ing!

Hey, Gang.  I just posted the following message to the MOT email list.  I need your input, too...

Folks, the day of reckoning has arrived.

The new experimental MOT website has been up and running for about three months.  Now, it's time for us to vote on whether we want to stick with the email-based website that we've had for all these many years or switch to the new forum-based alternate site.  So, I'm soliciting your votes.  You can reply to the whole list or directly to me.  Voting will be open through the end of the year.  I'll be in San Antonio the week between Christmas and New Years, but I'll still have email capability.

If you haven't been there yet, the experimental website is up at http://www.miniownersoftexas.com and has been since mid-September.  If you haven't been there already, please go there now -- register -- explore the site -- and then let me know one way or the other which website you prefer.  The new member registration on the experimental site will only be open until the end of the year and I need your votes by then.

If you'll pardon the political term, this is a "democratic" organization.  You'll notice that I used a lower-case "democratic."  What I mean is that this organization is run by YOU -- our members -- and YOU now have to make a decision as to which way you want to see us go in the future.

If you don't like either of the websites and think that you have a better idea, please let me know.  I'm more than willing to explore the options.  I'm just looking for SOME way to keep our merry little band of Mini/MINI-acs alive and thriving.

You can reply to the whole list or reply directly to me at:  jlieberman37 - at - comcast - dot -net

If any of you would care to get together while I'm in SA, please let me know.  I think that Michael Playle and I are going to get together for lunch the Sunday after Christmas and you would be more than welcome to join us then.  If you can't make it that day, I'll be there until the morning of New Years Day.

I certainly hope that everybody remembered to raise a pint (or a glass, can, or bottle of some beverage) today in memory of Sir Alec Issigonis -- the father of the Mini.  Today would have been his 104th birthday.

Hey, Gang!

I'm planning to be over your way this coming Sunday, 11/14, to pick up a front subframe from Jim G in McKinney.  If any of you would fancy an impromptu get-together while I'm there to quaff a couple of cool ones and maybe even grab a bite of lunch somewhere in the McKinney area, please let me know ASAP.  If all goes according to Hoyle, I plan to leave Shreveport about 6 o'clock that morning and get to his place around 10:00 or 10:30.  So I figure that we might be able to get together around noon if anybody's interested and knows of a good gathering place somewhere in the McKinney area.  Please let me know.

Actually, I'll chime in right now.

Admin1 is exactly right -- but let me expand on that.  For now, this experimental website is hosted by my friend Firejava for FREE on his server.  He's been a tremendous help to us in getting this thing set up and running right.  However, I rather imagine that, somewhere down the road, he's going to ask us to pay for his services.  And I think we should be more than willing to do that.  Right now, we have about $250 in the bank, but I don't ever want to see that amount drop below $200 because, if it does, we're going to have to start paying for what is now a free checking account.

Please remember, though -- for NOW this is strictly an experimental site.  Once we've got all of the bugs worked out of it, then -- and only then -- will I put it up for a vote of the full membership as to whether we want to go with the new format or stick with the old one.  YOU, the members, will make that final decision.  If and when the decision is made to shift to this new site, THEN I will put out a blanket call for contributions to keep it up and running.

Dues?!?   Cheesy

Dues?  What the h*ll are dues, Jim?!?!?  8<{)

For now, firejava is hosting our experimental website for free on his server and even helping us get it set up right.  I rather imagine that we'll have to start paying him SOMETHING in the future to maintain it but, for now, it's not costing us a penny.  If and when he decides to start charging us, I'll send out a blanket email to both lists asking for contributions -- but I'll NEVER impose a dues structure!!  We were organized and structured to be dues- and structure-free and it's my intention to keep it that way.
