Title: Hello from Justin, TX - new to forum/minis/cars in general
Post by: Tremainmini on April 20, 2022, 09:10:40 AM
Hello all,

Iím very happy to be joining you all here, and am excited to keep tabs on this forum and learn many new things. I am the 20yo owner of a 1962 Austin Mini 850 and it is my very first classic, so I have lots to learn.

Unfortunately itís got a smoking habit right now, and the SU is confusing me beyond belief, so it is going over to KIP or BAS in the near future.

Additionally, if anyone in the North FW area would be interested in allowing me to shadow them a few times to learn some things about these cars. I would be really interested in doing so.

Welcome to MOT, Anthony.  All you folks in the DFW area -- pitch in and help him learn the ins and outs of Mini ownership.

Hi Anthony, welcome to MOT!!

Very nice looking early Mini, I look forward to meeting you and hearing the story on how it came into your life.

Lloyd at BAS was using an 848 powered car as his daily commuter,  so he'll know what to do.  I've heard good things about Kip also, but I haven't had them do any work on my cars.

The SU is a fairly simple carb, but it took me a while to wrap my head around the jet size changing as the needle moves up and down.   If the bolt pattern to the intake manifold is two studs/nuts vertically, it's an HS2, common on the 850s originally.   If the bolt pattern is diagonal, most likely an HS4.

The one thing I've heard constantly over the years is... if you think it has a carb problem, check and fix the ignition.   It's not for nothing that Joseph Lucas is half jokingly called "the prince of darkness".   If that doesn't solve the problem, then it's time to go after the carb.   Then again, the new gasoline formulations don't store well, and aren't always kind to the rubber and plastics in the fuel systems of the Mini.

The Dallas All British Car Day is going to be on Sunday May 1st, 2022 at Dreyfus Club Pt on White Rock Lake.  www.allbritishcarday.com (http://www.allbritishcarday.com)   I plan to be there, although I'm not sure I'll be able to bring a car this year, as the sports teams say, it's a rebuilding year for me.   I will be wearing my pride via Mini themed t-shirt though.

Cheers,

After calling both places, it looks like Iím going to take it to BAS. Little bit closer, and they seemed much more excited to really help me understand what is going on with it. I will be at the British car day, itís an early 21st birthday gift for me! Very excited to meet you hopefully, and As many mini owners as I can.

Thank you for the warm welcome
