I don't have one, but to explain Alex's comment over on Mini Mania:

If your alternator is putting out more current than the gauge can handle => bad things are very likely to happen.

If your alternator is a 35-45 amp one, then a 60 amp gauge would likely be ok.  However, a 75 amp alternator pushing through a 30 amp or even 60 amp gauge would not be good.

Hello Michael

After I read his post and saw the link at spridgetguru.com that 7even linked I did me some learning and came to the conclusion that my best bet is to install a voltmeter instead. I have no idea what the current alternator is putting out but if in the future I decide to install a higher output alternator then trouble can be a possibility.

PS you going to TXABCD in Round Rock in Sept.? Maddie and I will be going. So will John and Maureen even thou John doesn't have a Mini any longer and Carlos and Liz Caballero will be going also. Hope to see some of you guys there.

Cheers

Hi Angel,

I am strongly considering going to Round Rock.  Though I am Mini-less, I may have something else British by then.

Cheers,

If you have a local parts yard with a good foreign representation, look for an '80s XJ6, they had Smith's voltmeters.  Got one a few years back.

I probably have some ammeters kicking around too.    The heat is getting to me but I thought Triumph used them on the Spitfires and I'm sure they had the same alternators as the Spridgets of the same vintage.   Then again I may be thinking of my '74 Opel Manta.   Want a VDO gauge?

I hope to be at the Round Rock show too.
